Avernia is the ancient realm of the fallen Angels and their spawn. A land of obsidian citadels, volcanic plains, and rigid hierarchy where order is valued above all else. Unlike the chaotic horrors of Othmog, Avernia is governed through discipline, unwavering law, contracts, and ambition, producing a society renowned for its cruel efficiency and military organization.
Its inhabitants bear varying traces of infernal ancestry and pursue advancement through service, cunning, and achievement. Though feared throughout much of Therasya and often accused of schemes both real and imagined, Avernia remains a powerful civilization whose influence extends far beyond its borders through diplomacy and carefully calculated alliances.
History & Founding
Avernia was born from rebellion, defeat and punishment. In the Spire of Seeking, Asmodeus defied Harmony, attacked the Pool of Souls, and was cast among the lower races with those angelic battalions that followed him into the Fall. No mortal charter founded Avernia. It was made when exiled divinity found volcanic stone, looked upon lava and ash, and decided that damnation could still be organized.
Damnation could still be organized.
After the Fall, Asmodeus, Lucifer, Mammon, Leviathan and other fallen angels reached the island that southern tongues would later call the Island of Fire. There, among lava, smoke and blackened stone, they forged the crater cities of Avernia City, Lightan, Valcrist, Mammonath, Ashblight, Moltenia and Destinus. From these places came fire and water devils, imps, slaves, infernal hosts and the power of the Six Grand Dukes, all bound beneath Asmodeus’ rising command.
Avernia’s later history is the history of schemes laid across Spires. It extends its hand into Zargovia, Evernight, the Undersea, the cursed desert and the Blood War. The theft of the Necromancy Grimoire from Helkor, the protection and shaping of Zargovia, and the devilish interventions against demon power all reveal the same truth: Avernia rarely wins by storming a gate when it can wither the gate, steal its key, and betray its defenders.
Government & Succession
Avernia is ruled through a pyramidal infernal hierarchy. At its summit stands Asmodeus, the Eternal Mind of Plot, Prime Ruler of the Island of Fire and supreme ruler of all devils. Beneath him stand the Six Grand Dukes, each commanding cities, armies, domains, cults and long chains of lesser powers.
Succession is not a matter of bloodline or popular will. There is none for the six grand seats. Rank belongs to those who can keep it by contract, strategy, and proven usefulness no matter the means. A duke may hold a city because Asmodeus permits it. A general may rise because a campaign needed him and lesser devil may become dangerous because the wording of a bargain left room for his ambition. In Avernia, law is everything.
The ruler is therefore both known and unreachable. Asmodeus rules from Avernia City and the deepest rift of Malsheem, yet even his Grand Dukes do not fully know the hidden seat of his mind. The bureaucracy beneath him is precise, cruel and impossibly patient, designed so that every ambition strengthens the pyramid unless it is strong enough to reshape it.
Society & Culture
Avernian culture is built around rank, obligation and controlled ambition. The devils deeply hate chaos and despise waste, punish incompetence and preserve cruelty only when cruelty produces obedience or leverage. A mortal seeing Avernia for the first time may expect a howling hellscape and instead find ledgers, banners, courts, military parades, contracts and punishments performed with ceremonial precision.
Its people and servants bear many marks of the infernal order. Fallen angels stand at the heights, while devils of fire and water, Abishai, Erinyes, imps and other infernal breeds fill the cities, armies and courts. Slaves and bound servants exist beneath them, but even servitude in Avernia is more structured than the feeding pits of Helkor or the madness of Othmog. To be owned by Avernia is horror. Yet to be ignored may be worse, for then one has no place in the design.
Avernia’s influence also shaped mortal descendants beyond the island. Zargovian bloodlines preserve traces of devilish ancestry, allowing them to breathe sulfurous Avernian air, resist demonic corruption and serve as instruments of the Dominion. To Avernia, such peoples are not merely allies. They are proof that flesh and strategy can be bred into a weapon.
Faith
Avernia does not worship the Eternals as southern nations do. Its sacred structure bends toward Asmodeus, remembered in Zargovian doctrine as Asmiil, the principle of plotting, machinations and strategy. Around him stand the Six fallen angelic powers: Lucifer / Phosiel, Dispater / Plesthiel, Mammon / Emmiel, Nomos / Kaldiil, Fierna / Elendiil and Opsinoi / Merithl.
The theology of Avernia calls the Fall a necessity rather than a sin. Devils are remembered by their faithful not as betrayers of Harmony, but as those who chose action when the Great Plan seemed absent. Their war against demons is beyond military. It is spiritual vindication. Every contract, every legion and every sacrifice is another argument that Asmodeus was right to seize control of his own fate.
Harmony is not entirely absent, but her worship is dangerous in meaning. A few clerics preach the possible return of the Fallen Angels to her embrace, and in Zargovian lands the All-Mother is honored in rare festivals. In Avernia itself, such belief survives only where Asmodeus permits it, or where even hope has been turned into another clause. Even if not directly worshiped, She and the Eternals are respected.
Military
Avernia’s military is the opposite of Othmog’s hordes of ruin. It is highly organized and its armies include fallen angels, Erinyes, Abishai, Pit Fiends, Lemures, Cornugons, Barbazu, Spinagons, Sand Devils, Obsidian Devils, imps and slave hosts, each deployed according to infernal purpose and the preferences of the Grand Dukes.
Lucifer was commanding from Lightan with fallen angels and Erinyes. Mammon gathers brutal armies in Mammonath, where the Warmonger keeps hosts ready for the Blood War. Dispater rules Ashblight and the flying Iron Tower with Sand Devils, Blue Abishai and Obsidian Devils, while Fierna wages his schemes from fiery Phlegethos in Evernight. Nomos’s forces haunt the Zargovian caverns, and other infernal powers maintain their own regions, rivalries and armies.
Avernia’s great enemies are demons, but its war is not limited to demonkind. It fights angels, Illithid, Helkorians, rival cults and anyone who threatens the infernal order. At times it has stood beside angels against demons, as in the cursed desert, but such alliances are never clean. Avernia may save a battlefield and damn the treaty table on the same day.
Economy & Trade
The wealth of Avernia comes from volcanic power, infernal industry, bound labor, military services, contracts, rare metals, obsidian, sulfur, ash-born reagents and the traffic of favors. Its cities are crater-forges and court-machines as much as settlements. There is rich green land between the lava streams and caverns of unimaginable wealth in precious stones and metal.
Trade with Avernia is never merely exchange of goods for coin. A shipment of obsidian blades may carry a military obligation. A loan may outlive the borrower’s bloodline. A safe passage may require silence when the next army marches. Mortal courts and hidden contract-houses sometimes seek Avernian assistance against demons or rivals, then learn that devils count payment in generations.
Devils count payment in generations.
Zargovia remains the clearest mortal expression of Avernian influence. Through it, Avernia gains a foothold on Therasya, access to necromantic defense, soldiers resistant to demonic corruption and a political instrument close to Avaton, Dymarth, Lydoria and the western marches.
Foreign Relations
Avernia’s relations are built on enmity and usefulness. With Zargovia, it maintains deep religious, bloodline and military ties, though much of this influence remains veiled behind Dominion doctrine. With the southern realms, it is distrusted, feared and sometimes secretly negotiated with. With Avaton and Lydoria, suspicion often becomes open hostility because of Zargovia and the undead wall.
With Cloudkeep and the angelic hosts, Avernia shares ancient enmity, although for devils it has turned to hatred. Sermon, Thearetos and Gregorian stood among those who repelled Asmodeus at the Pool, and that wound has never healed. Yet the demon threat has forced moments of impossible cooperation, particularly in the cursed desert, where devils and angels joined to destroy the last demon forces.
With Othmog, no peace is possible. The Blood War defines Avernia’s existence as much as any throne or city. Demons are the chaos Avernia claims to oppose, and Graazt is the shadow Asmodeus most wishes to extinguish. Helkor, though demon-aligned and corrupted, is also a target of infernal calculation, especially after the theft of the Necromancy Grimoire robbed it of a weapon that might have threatened all southern lands.
