Consequence in All Actions
Karma Magic is rooted in the truth that a deed does not end when the hand that committed it withdraws. Every action imprints consequences upon the actor’s soul and upon the world around it. The nature of this potency is shaped by intention, mercy, kindness, courage, but also from betrayal, cruelty and fear. Karma is the sum of these consequences across a person’s present life and every state of existence that preceded it. Reincarnation conceals memory, but it does not erase what the soul has done. A being may enter a new life unable to remember an ancient oath, an unforgiven betrayal or an act of extraordinary compassion, yet the weight of those deeds remains within it, defining the soul’s journey in the Pool and its path during reincarnation. Some scholars confuse Karma with divine favour or punishment imposed by the Eternals. They are sorely mistaken. It is a law of existence, born from the relationship between action and consequence, and it binds all creatures and their spirits alike.
Aenaos describes the worlds as turning upon two axes. Order grants structure, but structure alone cannot lead a soul towards purity. Goodness determines the quality of action, its reason, means, purpose and the suffering or restoration that followed. A merciful act performed for applause does not carry the same weight as mercy offered at personal cost, just as betrayal committed beneath unbearable coercion differs from treachery embraced through ambition. Every action releases ripples into the world, and the consequences that return complete the spire. Karma Magic allows a trained practitioner to perceive, gather and guide those ripples, transforming spiritual consequence into protection, healing, justice or corruption and destruction.
Karma is the scale of reincarnation. The deeper a soul sinks, the more diminished the form into which it is reborn. This allows the soul to even out past transgression. Enlightened souls on the contrary are reborn in higher states of existence. It is not uncommon for a soul that has followed Entropy’s path for long to be reincarnated to such a defiled body that its path of corruption becomes eventually a self-fulfilling prophecy.
The Measure of the Soul
Scholars of Karma speak of a centre of balance. This is not a vulgar tally of virtues and crimes, but a true measurement by which the soul positions in creation. Karma may rise through accumulated positive actions, for it draws the soul closer to Harmony through acts of courage, mercy, protection, truth and sacrifice. But Karma may also diminish, driving the soul farther away through betrayal, cruelty, corruption, abuse of power and the deliberate increase of suffering. The farther a soul moves from Harmony, the more power it may potentially command and the more difficult it becomes to return unchanged.
Time alone does not determine karmic weight. A thousand minor kindnesses may shape a life, but a single act may outweigh them all. One person who saves a nation from ruin may rise farther towards this spiritual elevation in a single day than another does through decades of modest service. Likewise, a ruler who condemns an entire people through high treason, opens the gates of a city to demons or knowingly sacrifices thousands for personal gain may plunge into depths of negative karma from which several lives may not be enough to recover. Consequence, intention and scale are all weighed together. Karma does not imprint on a soul that an action occurred but it is founded on what the action meant. Intent is the defining gravity on how actions affect one’s Karma.
A soul that has passed through many incarnations possesses greater potential to gather and channel karma. Each life expands the vessel, leaving behind layers of endurance, consequence and spiritual capacity. An ancient soul may therefore contain far greater reserves than one newly entered into the cycle of rebirth, although a newly created soul begins in purity and balance, for all creations of Harmony are crafted in her image. Many reincarnations may produce a saint capable of drawing upon centuries of sacrifice, or a tyrant carrying cruelties so old that even their names have vanished from history. Rebirth grants capacity, not virtue. Every new existence offers the soul another opportunity to rise, fall or remain trapped beneath the weight of earlier choices.
Personal Karma and Karma Nodes
Karma Magic draws upon two sources: the accumulated karma of the practitioner and the Karma Nodes formed within the world. Personal Karma is the consequence carried by the soul through its present and former lives. It belongs to the practitioner because it arose from their own decisions, sacrifices and failures. Drawing upon it is safer, as the caster more deeply understands the intentions from which the power emerged. Yet personal karma is finite in its immediate accessibility. It remains woven into the soul’s history, but only part of it can be gathered and directed at any given time.
Karma nodes arise where actions of extraordinary consequence have left their spiritual weight upon the land. Ancient battlefields, sites of massacre, places of liberation, sacred groves, ruined capitals, tombs of martyrs and halls where entire peoples were sacrificed may all become such nodes. A battlefield upon which defenders knowingly fell to save a nation may gather positive karma for centuries. A prison in which generations suffered beneath deliberate cruelty may become a well of negative power. Places where demonic corruption was released, where an oath condemned thousands or where one act of mercy ended generations of hatred may similarly retain the power of what occurred there.
A practitioner standing within a Karma Node may draw upon a resource far beyond their personal reserve. This strength is never neutral. The node retains the memory of the event that created it and influences every spell shaped through it. Positive nodes favour protection, revelation, restoration and liberation. Negative nodes answer more readily to fear, pain, corruption, domination and destruction. A caster who draws from a node allows the consequences of its history to pass through their soul. An inexperienced practitioner may be overwhelmed by memories that are not their own, adopt the grief of the dead, or become consumed by the event whose karma they attempted to command.
Dark places therefore attract those who seek rapid power. Servants of Entropy, corrupted mystics and other agents of evil search for ancient massacres, betrayed cities and forgotten sites of atrocity where negative karma has gathered. Some deliberately create new nodes through organised cruelty, ritual execution or the prolonged suffering of captives. They understand that evil karma is easier to release violently and that a sufficiently corrupted place can sustain destructive workings far beyond the natural capacity of a single soul. Such nodes become wellsprings of curses and weapons in the endless war against goodness.
Lahesis, the Laherion and the Eternal Signs
Karma does not originate from Lahesis, but few beings understand its patterns more deeply. Being the Eternal of Fate, she perceives the relationship between action, consequence and the future paths through which a soul may pass. Her offspring, the Laherion, became guardians of goodness and protectors of places where karmic balance is threatened. They preserve sites of sacrifice, contain regions saturated with ancient evil and guide those whose choices may influence nations or entire Spires. Their work is not to remove consequence, for even Lahesis cannot erase what has been done. They protect the conditions under which goodness may answer evil and ensure that negative power does not remain unopposed.
Against them stand agents of corruption who guide souls towards darker choices, cultivate negative Karma Nodes and turn accumulated suffering into Entropy’s will. Their conflict with the Laherion is not always fought through armies or open battle. It occurs in the councils of rulers before war is declared, beside traitors deciding whether to open a gate, within temples where fear may become persecution and at battlefields where mercy or slaughter will determine the karma of generations. The Laherion seek to preserve clarity and the possibility of goodness. Their enemies seek to narrow every choice until cruelty appears inevitable.
Before a consequential action, practitioners may seek guidance through the Eternal Signs. The oldest teaching attributed to Lahesis is simple: “Observe and understand the world. Your actions will become clear.” The Signs do not command the caster, nor do they reveal an unchangeable future. They place the practitioner into a heightened state of awareness in which the likely consequences of action may be perceived. A warrior may understand that mercy will allow an enemy to kill again, or that execution will create a martyr whose followers destroy a kingdom. A ruler may recognise that apparent generosity is driven by vanity, while a condemned traitor may see one final act capable of restoring part of what was lost. The Signs prepare the soul to use Karma Magic by aligning perception, intention and consequence.
This insight does not remove free will. A practitioner may understand the likely result and still choose wrongly. Indeed, such a choice may carry greater karmic weight because it was made with clear awareness. Those touched by the Signs often become quiet and observant, for they learn that no action exists in isolation and that even refusal is a choice with consequences of its own.
Aperion and the Mournborn
Aperion, the Threadless, teaches his spawn, the Mournborn to gather negative karma from cruelty and despair, drawing especially upon dark nodes where massacres and ruined religions have stained the land. His servants release this power with terrifying strength, shaping it into curses, madness, misfortune and deadly violence, though every use drives them deeper into corruption and makes control increasingly difficult as their reserves diminish. Where the Laherion preserve goodness and guide souls towards the Pool, Aperion’s brood wage war against consequence itself, cultivating suffering until each atrocity becomes a permanent tear in souls’ spires.
Reflections of Karma
Among the most recognisable incantations of the path is the Reflection of Karma. Through still water, polished steel, glass, mirrors, enchanted surfaces or the receptive spaces of sacred groves, a practitioner may perceive the karmic condition of a soul as spreading ripples. Karma expresses itself through images drawn from the nature of the observer and the deeds of the subject. A murderer may be reflected with hands that remain stained no matter how often they are washed. A soul burdened by betrayal may appear fractured across a sheet of steel, while one shaped by sacrifice may cast light into water even beneath Theril’s darkened sky.
Reflections may reveal scenes from previous incarnations, faces long forgotten, chains formed from unresolved oaths, wounds carried by the soul or ripples spreading from a deed whose consequences have not yet reached their destination. A clear reflection suggests self-knowledge and acceptance. A distorted one may reveal denial, deception, interference from a Karma Node or memories concealed by reincarnation. The reflection does not always show guilt or virtue directly. It shows consequence, and only a trained Karma caster can understand what the symbols mean.
The Laherion are said to read such reflections with unmatched clarity, though even they approach ancient souls cautiously. Evil practitioners also use reflective rites to locate weakness, identify hidden guilt or discover which negative Karma Node will answer most readily to a victim’s past. In corrupted groves and mirrors of lack ichor, a soul may be shown only its worst possible reflection until it accepts that image as truth. Thus even a power meant to reveal can become an instrument of despair.
The Limits of Consequence
Negative karma is easier to unleash repeatedly because it follows simpler and violent courses. Pain answers anger, fear feeds hatred and destruction requires less effort than restoration. A caster powerful in negative karma may release curses, violent force and corrupting effects in rapid succession, appearing almost inexhaustible. Yet every manifestation reduces the amount of karma immediately accessible. As his reserve diminishes, each further working becomes progressively harder to shape. Concentration must deepen, strain increases and the caster is forced to reach farther into the soul or draw more recklessly from a nearby node while the danger of being consumed rises with each casting.
Positive karma is harder to accumulate but does not obey the same limitation of increased difficulty. Protection, healing, redemption and the strengthening of others often require years of courage, restraint and sacrifice. A single great deed may create an immense reserve, but such deeds cannot be performed merely to generate power without true intent. Goodness pursued only as a means of gaining strength is diminished by the selfishness of its purpose. Expending positive karma is more controlled, thus endures and can be channeled at greater depth and duration.
Karma is not destroyed when used. The soul’s history remains part of its existence, and in time its ripples may return to it, the place or the chain of consequences from which it arose. What is depleted is the caster’s immediate ability to gather and guide it. Attempting to draw beyond that limit may damage the soul, awaken memories from previous lives, alter the practitioner’s karmic position or bind him permanently to a Karma Node. A caster may lose the ability to distinguish personal consequence from the deeds of others, carrying the hatred of a battlefield or the grief of a murdered people long after leaving the place.
The greatest practitioners sometimes accept these dangers deliberately. A Laherion may exhaust the karma of many lives to prevent the fall of a civilisation. An agent of evil may consume every remaining fragment of negative power to condemn a city, knowing that the act will drive their soul beyond recovery. Such deeds may alter the course of a Spire, but they never escape consequence. Karma Magic frightens the wise more than flame or steel, for no armour can resist the sum of what a soul has chosen to become.
No armour can resist the sum of what a soul has chosen to become.
“Every scale balances eventually. Karma Magic only decides who is standing on it when it does.”
