DEMOCRACYPHALANXKARHAIOICRENESPEARMANWARRIOR PEOPLE

The Commonwealth of Avaton stands beneath a hard western sun, where the Medusa Plains open before cursed sands and the Lefko Potamos watches the misted border of Zargovia. It is a realm of acropolises, bronze law, marble memory, and spear-citizens who believe that a people survives only when every hand knows its place in the line.

The Aenarchs call themselves heirs of Crene and children of the Angels who shielded the Karhaioi during their flight across ruin and sea. Others call them proud, severe, and impossible to bend. I have found both judgments true. In Avaton the spear is not only a weapon. It is ancestry, citizenship, philosophy, and warning.

The spear is not only a weapon. It is ancestry, citizenship, philosophy, and warning.

History & Founding

Avaton begins with the drowning of Crene. When Dagon’s wrath swallowed the old Karhaioi empire, King Ipermahos led the surviving people across the waters toward Therasya, guarded by angels whose blood and blessing marked the refugees forever. From that crossing the Aenarchs were born: mortal in warmongering and grief, but carrying a trace of celestial severity in their laws, faces, and war-discipline.

The first foundation recorded for Avaton belongs to 1420 BS, when Ipermahos led the last Aenarchs to Archaic Oros and laid the foundations of Avaton’s colonies. From these first heights grew Avaton itself, Krataia, Ipsisti, and the later acropolis network that would define the commonwealth. The steel Spearman above the capital is a constant reminder of survival: a people who had lost a continent and chose to answer with order.

Avaton’s later history is written in phalanx lines. Its first true phalanx changed war in the west, its armies later marched into Othmog and returned broken, and during the long darkness the Aenarchs fought, retreated, endured, and judged their own failures with brutal honesty. In the present age they remain one of the pillars of the South Alliance, though old wounds with Lydoria, Zargovia, and the arcane nations have never fully healed.

Government & Succession

Avaton is a citizen commonwealth governed by the Aenarch Senate and the houses of the acropolises. The old kingship of Ipermahos remains sacred in memory, but not in daily rule. The commonwealth no longer trusts its fate to a single crowned will. It places authority in citizens proven by lineage, service, public discipline, and the ability to stand before the assembly without shame. King Agilaos presides the Senate and is commander of the armies of Avaton in case of conflict.

Power is distributed among senators, strategoi, judges, priestly advisers, and the elder spear-houses. Each acropolis sends voices to the capital, and each voice is expected to defend its city with argument before it defends it with armies. Wealth matters, as it does everywhere, but in Avaton wealth without service is considered a soft corruption.

Succession is therefore civic rather than dynastic. Offices pass by election, acclaim, family prestige, military record, and the judgment of peers. The current ruling authority is the Aenarch Senate, chaired by a first-among-Aenarchs. The title matters less than the oath, for no chair survives long if the phalanx, temples, and acropolises turn their faces away.

Society & Culture

Aenarch society is built around citizenship, duty, and discipline. Children learn letters beside formation drills, rhetoric beside spear-work, and history beside the story of Crene’s drowning. To be free in Avaton is not merely to possess rights, but to carry obligations before the Eternals, the acropolis, and the dead ancestors who crossed the sea.

The people are philosophers as much as soldiers, though their philosophy rarely softens them. They argue in porticoes, judge art by proportion, admire restraint, and distrust displays of unearned luxury. The Aenarch ideal is balance: strength without savagery, law without cowardice, courage without madness.

Outsiders often find Avaton difficult. The commonwealth can appear cold, proud, and merciless toward weakness, especially when compared with gentler realms. Yet beneath that severity lies a society terrified of collapse. They remember that Crene was once mighty, and might did not save it.

Faith

Halshire stands at the heart of Avaton’s public faith, not as a mere patron of war but as the Eternal of martial honor, civic courage, and disciplined sacrifice. The spear brother before battle, the oath before debate, and the shield raised for another citizen all belong to Halshire’s shadow.

Zoodotis is honored as the giver of life and sun, especially across the Medusa Plains and among farmers who feed the acropolises. Maat receives worship in courts and assemblies, while Alke is loved by soldiers who endure beyond the first charge. The angelic protectors of the Karhaioi crossing are remembered in household rites, battle standards, and ancestral hymns.

Aloria is also respected in their pantheon. Avaton cannot deny her power or her origin in Aenarch lands, but her name is tied to the revolt that birthed Lydoria and broke the old order of families. Some curse her, some fear her, and a few quiet philosophers claim that no realm is honest until it can honor the Eternal born from its own injustice.

Military

Avaton’s military is the phalanx, and all other arms exist to support or protect it. The Phalanx Spearman is more than a soldier-class. He is the living symbol of the commonwealth. Shield joins shield, spear joins spear, breath joins breath, and the individual vanishes into a wall that thinks with one mind.

The individual vanishes into a wall that thinks with one mind.

Every acropolis maintains citizen hosts, spear tutors, reserve formations, scouts, engineers, and coastal guards. Along the shores of Avaton, watchers search for signs of Dagon’s servants, Fallen raiders, and strange sails out of the cursed waters. Along the Lefko Potamos, frontier patrols watch the mists of Zargovia, where undead, devil-backed agents, and rotting redwoods mark a border that never sleeps.

Avaton mistrusts unchecked magic, but it is not foolish enough to ignore sorcery’s dangers. Its armies include priestly wardens, mage-hunters, oath-bound scouts, wordists and veterans trained to hold formation against fear, corruption, and unnatural force. Their weakness is rigidity. Their strength is that once the line forms, few things in Therasya can break it cheaply.

Economy & Trade

Avaton feeds itself from the Medusa Plains and the fertile lands around its acropolises. Grain, olives, wine, bronze, marble, spear-wood, armor, stonework, and trained soldiers move through its markets. Its wealth is not as fluid as Andor’s nor as glittering as Elemendia’s, but it is stable, disciplined, and heavily tied to land, service, and military readiness.

The capital and sister acropolises form a network of roads, storehouses, training grounds, temples, and civic courts. Merchants are respected when they strengthen the commonwealth and distrusted when they behave like men without roots. Philosophers, engineers, weapon-smiths, tutors, and oath-recorders are as important to the economy as farmers and sailors.

Trade is strongest with Heraldon, Andor, Dymarth, Kinetica, Starfall, Thergen empire and the allied realms. Relations with Elemendia remain cold because of Avaton’s hatred of magical arrogance, slavery, and arcane excess. Zargovia is not a true trade partner but a watchfire beyond the river, while Lydoria remains both kin and rival, too close in blood to be ignored and too bitter in history to be trusted easily.

Foreign Relations

Avaton belongs to the old South Alliance and appears among the realms that remember the fallen wars: Thergen empire, Andor, Dymarth, Kinetica, Erenor, and Starfall. The March of Remembrance still draws Avaton’s representatives to Barrowfen, where the alliance honors the dead who held the marshes against Helkor and demonkind. Such ceremonies matter to Avaton because memory is a civic weapon.

Andor is a commercial and political partner, though Avaton distrusts merchant softness. Dymarth is respected for honor and arms. Ael Maern and the Thergen are honored as old guardians. Kinetica is valued for craft, Starfall for endurance, and Heraldon for angelic faith, however excessive its zeal may appear.

Its enmities are old. Dagon destroyed Crene. Othmog remains the root of demonic war. Helkor is hated for its corruption and war-hosts. Zargovia is watched as a devil-backed dominion whose undead and necromantic borders stain the east. Lydoria is more difficult: enemy, daughter, rival and kin all bound under Aloria’s name.
