The history of Ancestral is not measured in centuries, but in Spires, vast cycles of creation, destruction, and renewal that have shaped the world since the dawn of existence.

The Early Ages

In the earliest ages, the Eternals walked openly among their creations: dragons ruled the skies, titans strode across the land, and the first civilizations rose beneath divine guidance. Yet every age carried within it the seeds of its own downfall.

The eternal struggle between Harmony and Entropy echoed through the wars of angels and their fallen brethren, the devils and demons. Their struggle toppled mighty empires and loosed cataclysms that reshaped whole continents. Kingdoms vanished beneath oceans, ancient cities were consumed by darkness, and countless peoples were driven from their ancestral homes. From the ruins of one age another emerged — inheriting fragments of the past, but rarely its wisdom.

The Years of Darkness

The greatest catastrophe of the current Spire came with the Years of Darkness, when the world was cast into Theril’s shadow and the mortal races sought refuge beneath the surface, within the Thergen realms. For centuries they endured in the depths, until the Exodus began, and the Heroes of the Seed embarked upon their legendary quest.

Their journey culminated in the planting of the Seed of Life, restoring the light of Zoodotis to the world and marking the beginning of a new age. Cities were rebuilt, kingdoms reclaimed their lands, and civilization flourished once more upon the surface.

The Feyan Crusade

Yet peace proved fleeting. Empowered by their role in the world’s salvation, the Fey rose to unprecedented prominence, forging a vast empire across the southern realms. Driven by visions of a world free from corruption, they launched a great crusade into Othmog itself, seeking the complete eradication of demonkind.

Only later was it revealed that the campaign had been guided by the subtle manipulations of a disguised devil, whose true purpose was to plunge the world into further conflict and weaken both mortal and demonic powers alike.

The War of Dreams

Not long after, a second crisis emerged: an unnatural darkness spread across the world, and the boundaries between dream and reality began to weaken. Behind it stood Morgenydon, whose ambition was nothing less than the conquest of the Plane of Dreams. Through forbidden powers he sought to command the minds of all mortals as they slept — forging an empire not of territory, but of consciousness itself. Though his designs were ultimately thwarted, the scars of that conflict remain.

“Count the Spires if you wish — the world has always forgotten more ages than it remembers.”
