True Names
Of all the caster paths, Power-Word Magic is the one that mortals may justly claim to have discovered, though not to have created. Its foundations predate the Grimoires and perhaps even the Dragons, for they lie within the first meanings imagined by Harmony: the names by which one thing was distinguished from another, the cosmic sounds that gave Harmony’s intention shape, and the ordered relationship between the Word and reality. A true name is not merely the sound by which a being or object is identified. It is the complete expression of its nature, purpose and place within Creation. To speak such a name with full understanding goes beyond description and touches the principle by which a thing exists. Angels carried fragments of this celestial speech when they descended among the early races. These were not spells in the mortal sense, but commands whose truth resonated through matter and soul alike.
Wordists
Mortals who heard these utterances could not reproduce their force merely by repeating them, for they lacked the innate grace of the Angels. However, over centuries, a small number learned that pronunciation was only the outermost layer. Meaning, context, intention and alignment with the concept as first conceived by Harmony had to become one. These practitioners became known as Wordists. They depended neither upon the Dragon Grimoires nor upon prayers offered to an Eternal. Instead, they studied the effects of angelic speech upon matter, learned to pronounce celestial words through the oldest mortal tongues, and trained themselves to perceive the consequences produced when a true word was fully understood. Thus Power-Word Magic emerged as a mortal mastery of principles already woven into Creation, more limited in vocabulary than angelic speech, but terrible in the depth of each successful utterance.
The Discipline of Speech
A Wordist does not merely shout “burn” to create fire. The word must be understood as gradual heat, illumination, destruction and how the flame changes matter. The caster must then narrow that meaning, directing the cosmic breadth of the word while preserving its true nature. When successful, the spoken sound carries an unnatural completeness, such that listeners feel that they have heard not the word describing a thing, but the thing itself. Doors open because the concept of passage is uttered, courage is awakened because fear is named and dismissed and bones fracture because severance is spoken. This path therefore demands extraordinary composure.
A universal truth
An incomplete interpretation may cause reality to obey the wrong aspect of a word, while excessive emotion may enlarge an utterance beyond its intended boundaries. A command meant for one enemy may affect friend and foe alike, while a word of protection may imprison those it was intended to save. Wordists are therefore trained in absolute concentration, self-control and precision of breath. They avoid anger and emotional excess that might disturb their craft, and consequently often appear aloof or detached from sentiment. Churches respect their workings because their source lies close to the divine language through which Harmony first ordered Creation. Arcane guilds, by contrast, remain sceptical of a discipline so dependent upon emotion and personal interpretation. Elemendia considers it crude and insufficiently controlled. Whatever outsiders may believe, Power-Word Magic remains a direct influence upon Creation and an enduring proof that universal truth exists.
