ISLAND REALMTHE FALLEN

Far beyond the coastal waters of Therasya to the east lie the Atoles, six greater islands and many lesser rocks hidden beneath dark mists and partly under the shadow of Theril. They are not merely a realm of the dead, but a dominion of those denied the peace of death: Fallen who still remember their names, skills, and grief, while their bodies rot beneath Mortigian’s call.

At the heart of the islands stands the Fallen City on Mortigian’s Gate, a vast necropolis ruled by Nuhial, first mortal to lose his soul and first to answer the Lord of Undeath. Around it stretch Toth Morghoul, Lichdom, Coronia, Forsaken, and Bonewrath, where cities of bone, flesh, and blood rise from rock and sand. There is no green country here, almost no harvest, and no mercy from Zoodotis’ light. Even the sea seems to pass these shores in silence.

History & Founding

Atoles begins with the fall of Faios. Once the Angel of Transition, Faios guided souls toward the Pool of Essence until Demon Lords stole his soul during the ancient struggle over the nature of death. What rose afterward was Mortigian, Lord of Undeath, a rotten echo of former harmony who could no longer endure the light of Zoodotis.

Nuhial was the first mortal to lose his soul and the first to answer Mortigian’s call. Because the undead burned beneath Zoodotis, they built their first city in darkness, and year after year the population of the soulless increased until the islands of Atoles became their kingdom. The earliest timeline tradition places the emergence of the Fallen and Atoles in Spire 7, while later records remember Nuhial’s founding of the City of Fallen as the political birth of the island empire.

The realm later survived threats from every side. Avernia tried to claim the Fallen and failed, teaching the undead the terrible value of soul crystals. At the height of Nuhial’s power, Atoles struck north and south: one host was halted by Helkorian necromancers near the Chasm River, while another attacked Elemendia under the cover of mist in search of the Dragon Grimoires. Angels assaulted the islands afterward, but Mortigian himself descended from Theril, slew many of them, and dragged Enaretos’ soul into the Shadow Plain.

Government & Succession

Atoles is ruled as a necrocratic empire. Nuhial, Lich King and Emperor of the Fallen, commands from the Fallen City, but his authority is more than political. He is the first mortal servant of Mortigian, and every Fallen who answers the dark call is, directly or indirectly, bound to his dominion.

Below Nuhial stand lich-priests, necromantic governors, soul-keepers, island warlords, and the masters of the lesser Necropolis. The cities may have their own rivalries, but all are restrained by the same fear: the soul crystals. Control over those crystals means control over release, punishment, obedience, and final destruction.

Succession is not spoken of as in mortal courts. Atoles does not trust blood, election, or council. If Nuhial falls, power would pass to whoever can hold Mortigian’s favor, command the greatest number of soul crystals, and keep the Fallen from tearing one another apart in the hope of freedom.

Society & Culture

The Fallen are not mindless corpses. Many retain their personality, knowledge, memories, skills, and ambitions, which makes Atoles far more dangerous than a land of shambling dead. A fallen captain still remembers command, a fallen mage still remembers spellcasting, and a fallen artisan may continue the craft of beauty with hands that no longer belong to life.

Yet their society is built on rot, hunger, and bondage. Mindless undead are driven by the need for life energy, while ethereal withering souls haunt the borders between death and the Pool. Living creatures taken from Evernight, Elemendia, or mist-touched shores are used as servants, food, building matter, or worse.

To walk the Atoles is to experience a civilization without life. Its people keep order, build cities, hold armies, and preserve records, but everything they make is turned against the natural cycle. Their greatest fear is no longer death, but the capture of their soul by a demon.

Faith

Atoles does not practice faith as the living kingdoms understand it. Mortigian’s dominion replaces worship, and the memory of Faios has been twisted into the law of Undeath. What was once passage has become unlife.

Zoodotis is hated and feared, for his light burns the undead to destruction. The Pool of Essence is spoken of as a lost destination, the place where souls should have gone before demons and necromancers broke the road. The soul crystal has therefore become the most sacred and dreaded object in Atoles. It is a prison, treasure, ransom, and possible salvation.

Some Fallen dream of their crystals being hidden forever in Ral Mazal, the Chamber of Souls, where no demon can destroy them. Others secretly desire the destruction of their own crystal, hoping that the end of their cursed body may finally free what remains of them.

Military

The armies of Atoles are vast because they do not recruit only from the living. Fallen soldiers retain training from previous lives, mindless dead can be raised as expendable masses, and withering spirits serve as terror weapons against the living. Lich-priests, necromancers, grave-captains, and soul-wardens bind the host together.

The greatest strategic weapon of Atoles is the dark mist. Nuhial’s ancient spell hid the islands from the eye of Zoodotis and opened passages through which the undead could move where sunlight would otherwise destroy them. Through those passages, Atoles has threatened Elemendia, Helkor, Othmog, and the seas of Dagon.

The military also sends expeditions in search of soul crystals captured by demons. These missions are not merely raids, but holy wars of undeath, for every recovered crystal may secure a Fallen from final annihilation.

Economy & Trade

There is no true agriculture in Atoles. The islands are rock, sand, caves, and cursed shore, with sparse living vegetation to sustain a normal people. What Atoles lacks in grain, timber, and pasture it replaces with plunder, slave-taking, salvage, necromantic craft, and the terrible industry of bodies.

The cities are built not only from stone but from bone, flesh, blood, and preserved remains. Zalgun, the city of bones on Bonewrath, is remembered as one such horror. Artisans among the Fallen may still craft, but their materials and purposes have changed with their condition.

Trade with living nations is rare, secretive, and usually criminal. Smugglers, necromancers, desperate mages, and forbidden cults may seek relics from Atoles, while the Fallen seek bodies, lore, souls, crystals, and anything that weakens Zoodotis’ enemies or strengthens Mortigian’s grasp.

Foreign Relations

Atoles has no trusted place among the living kingdoms. Elemendia remembers the undead assault that came under mist seeking the Grimoires. Everday remembers the War of Life and the sunpriests whose sanctifying rays scorched undead forces as far as Cord’s Arm. Cloudkeep and the angelic hosts remember the failed assault on Atoles and the horror of Mortigian’s vengeance.

The realm’s enemies are not limited to the living. Avernia once tried to bring the Fallen under its command, and Atoles answered with resistance. Othmog’s demons still hold soul crystals that the undead seek to recover, while Dagon’s sea demons threaten the island borders from the ocean.

Helkor occupies an uneasy place in Atoles’ history. It has fought the undead and halted northern assaults, yet its necromancers and corrupted armies understand powers that most living kingdoms reject. Between Helkor and Atoles there is not peace, only dark familiarity.
