“Many surface dwellers imagine Evernight as a collection of caves beneath their feet. Such thoughts are born of ignorance. Evernight is not a cavern. It is a world, so vast that entire kingdoms rise and fall beneath the knowledge of those who walk beneath the light of Zoodotis. I have crossed its roads, sailed its underground seas, stood beneath mountains hidden beneath mountains, and witnessed wars that have raged for centuries without a single soul upon the surface becoming aware of them.”

Aenaos, Grand Chronomancer

Inside the body of the Eternal Mother stretches the realm known as Evernight, a subterranean world of colossal caverns, endless abysses, underground oceans, and forgotten civilizations.

It is older than many kingdoms of the surface, and perhaps more dangerous than all of them combined.

A World, Not a Cavern

Great mountain ranges rise within caverns so immense that seasons form around them. Rivers plunge from impossible heights into seas hidden beneath continents. Lava flows carve fiery chasms through the darkness, while glowing forests flourish beneath the radiance of Haze-infused crystals. Here, darkness is not merely the absence of light; it is the dominance of chaos upon living things.

The Haze Depths & the Sea of Ydor

At the heart of Evernight lie the luminous Haze Depths, vast regions where the Haze gathers in concentrations unseen upon the surface. There the air itself becomes infused with radiant Aether, glowing softly with pale light and carrying strange properties unknown to mortal scholars. Entire civilizations have arisen around these regions, drawing power, sustenance, and wonder from their presence.

The radiant Sea of Ydor reflects this brilliance most clearly: its crystal-blue waters shine beneath the darkness like a fallen sky, lit by colossal Sunken Crystals and the blessings of the Eternal Ydor. Upon its shores stand the magnificent cities of the Deep Merrok, carved into crimson stone and protected by the vigilant Water Templars, whose dams hold back both the waters of the Undersea and the armies of demons that constantly seek to overwhelm them. Beyond these defenses lies the vast Undersea, a realm of drowned cities, monstrous leviathans, and forgotten civilizations lost beneath waters older than recorded history.

Beauty and Terror

Yet beauty in Evernight is always accompanied by terror.

Power of the deepTheir nature
The Illithid swarmsHunt the tunnels, enslaving populations for knowledge forbidden even to the Chronomancers
Ancient ObyrithsRemnants of demonic ages predating creation, sealed in abyssal vaults
Devils & Water DemonsWage perpetual war, a reflection of the Eternals’ War
The Dark FeyRule silent kingdoms among fungal forests and crystal groves
The Pale FeyPreserve sanctuaries where Thera’s embrace still nourishes life against the dark

And in the deepest reaches dwell stranger things still: Fallen kingdoms, Dark Thergen strongholds, wandering Angels, Korr warbands, Aboleth enclaves, and creatures so ancient they remember events predating the current Spire.

The Sea of Ydor, crystal waters shining beneath the dark like a fallen sky, lit by the Sunken Crystals.

The Lesson of Humility

The greatest lesson Evernight teaches is humility. Upon the surface, rulers imagine themselves masters of creation. Below, they are insignificant: entire nations exist in darkness beyond their sight, forgotten gods sleep beneath underground seas, ancient dragons slumber beneath the mountains, and some legends speak of leviathans so vast that cities have been built upon their backs without their inhabitants ever realising the truth.

“Evernight does not end where the light fails; it merely begins to breathe.”
