At the frozen northwestern edge of Therasya lies Heraldon, a kingdom of cathedrals, glaciers, and unwavering faith. Its people dedicate every aspect of life to the teachings of the Archangel Sermon. Vast temples rise above fortified cities, while knightly orders patrol the coasts against demons and horrors emerging from the sea.
Heraldians see the world as a battlefield between divinity and corruption, and few possess any patience for compromise. Though their zeal can be exhausting, none can question their courage when darkness gathers.
History & Founding
Heraldon began with Nathayl son of Moranis, the first human said to have seen Cloudkeep and the Angels. Their grace struck him with revelation, and when his people gathered in prayer, Sermon appeared before them as warm white light and taught the words that would become the heart of Heraldian faith. Nathayl recorded those teachings in The Words of the Divine, purified his soul through devotion, and became remembered as the first human cleric of Sermon.
Led west through the Narrow of Purity, Nathayl’s followers reached the frozen peninsula that would become Heraldon. There they fought ice beasts and the water demons of Dagon through long nights, until angelic aid answered Nathayl’s prayers and the first heroes of the realm rose from the snow. After victory, Wingspyre was built, and Nathayl became both first king of Heraldon and Patriarch of Sermon’s growing clergy.
Heraldon’s later history is shaped by siege, revelation, and expeditions against Entropy. Pyria was born among its people during the years of darkness and guided them through cold and ruin with the Hymn to Hope. At Angel Cross, Sermon himself cast a stasis field over angels, Heraldians, and demons, freezing an entire battlefield until the spell faded centuries later and Zoodotis’ light burned the exposed fiends.

Government & Succession
Heraldon is a theocracy. The Patriarch of Sermon is also the Divine King, and his word stands above noble argument, mercantile interest, or common protest. The current ruler is Hayral Thenderin, High Cleric of Sermon, remembered as patient and compassionate toward the faithful, but severe toward infidelity, blasphemy, and anything that smells of corruption.
The kingdom is divided into four great Faith Duchies. Each is ruled by an Iron Knight who swears obedience to the Patriarch and clergy. The clergy governs its own matters within every duchy and cannot be touched even by the duke, while each duchy maintains forces for defense, doctrine, and internal discipline.
Law in Heraldon grows directly from Sermon’s dogma. Inquisitors investigate religious crimes and command punishments, while Iron Knights may judge in their absence. This has made Heraldon strong, obedient, and terrifyingly stable, but it has also made its common folk wary of careless words, false oaths, and any thought that might be mistaken for rebellion.
Society & Culture
Heraldians live beneath prayer, iron, and snow. The day begins and ends with devotion, and most citizens pray several times before sleep claims them. They admire discipline, self-denial, courage, and certainty, while compromise is treated less as wisdom and more as a dangerous softening of the soul.
Yet Heraldon is not merely cruel. Its people have endured cold, sea-horror, demonic invasions, and the memory of divine war. Their sternness is born from geography and faith alike. A farmer may speak like a penitent, a miner like a soldier, and a child may learn hymns before letters, but all believe that order is the wall between mortal life and the devouring dark.
Order is the wall between mortal life and the devouring dark.
The arts of Heraldon serve and worship war. Chanting, religious calligraphy, cathedral carving, and battle hymns define its culture. The hymn known as Celestial Sword is sung even beyond Heraldon, especially by soldiers who stand upon the Cord’s Arm and need courage to face the demon horde.
Faith
Sermon dominates Heraldian worship. He is not merely revered as a distant archangel but treated as the living pattern of righteous authority, divine obedience, and holy war. The Great Cathedral of Sermon in Wingspyre houses The Words of the Divine, and for many Heraldians the book is less a scripture than the spine of the realm. Thearetors and Gordion are also present in its temples forming the divine council of Three.
Pyria holds a special place in Heraldian memory because hope itself once walked among them during the years of darkness. Zoodotis is honored as the burning light that destroys exposed corruption, while Thera is remembered as the wounded mother whose living world must be defended. These devotions exist beneath Sermon’s doctrine, not beside it as equal temples of thought.
Blasphemy is no small matter in Heraldon. To worship demons, chaos, or evil powers is treason against both kingdom and cosmos. This conviction has saved the realm from corruption more than once, yet it has also given Inquisitors and Iron Knights power enough to frighten the innocent as well as the guilty.
Military
Heraldon’s military is built around the Iron Knights, armored zealots who carry Sermon’s wings upon their chests and charge first against chaos. They fight beside angelic forces when called, and their training prepares them to resist corruption and demonic influence. Some pass through the path of the cleric and can call divine power upon the battlefield.
Around the Iron Knights stand heavy infantry in armor and shield, lighter spearmen who hold enemy lines, flexible cavalry used for pursuit and encirclement, and archers who break demonic ranks before the charge. The clergy fields war-priests, healers, and battalions trained to preserve the faithful during battle as much as to destroy the enemy.
Heraldian forces do not defend Heraldon alone. Iron Knights serve tours upon Cord’s Arm and guard its keeps against demonic invasion. At the Narrow of Purity they maintain a strong garrison ready to answer Cloudkeep’s call, and a few of the most fervent even cross beyond safer lines to hunt Chaos’ servants in the southern reaches of Othmog up to Draklight.
Economy & Trade
Heraldon’s common life rests on agriculture, livestock, iron mining, weapon smithing, cathedral work, and military service. Its lands are cold, but not barren, and its iron mines are among the richest of the human kingdoms. Iron is so central to Heraldian identity that its currency bears the head of Nathayl, the first Patriarch.
Trade passes through Wingspyre, the Gulf of Sermon, the duchy roads, and the fortified approaches toward Cloudkeep and the Narrow of Purity. Merchants are welcome when honest, useful, and respectful. Those who mock the faith, cheat the temples, or carry suspicious relics often discover that Heraldian customs inspections can become religious trials with alarming speed.
The realm exports iron, weapons, armor, livestock, cathedral craft, copied scripture, and trained holy warriors. It imports finer grains, warm-climate goods, enchanted materials, and diplomatic patience, which it consumes faster than any southern wine.
Foreign Relations
Heraldon is closest to Cloudkeep, for its founding revelation and much of its military purpose are tied to the angels. The Thergen Empire and the defenders of Cord’s Arm respect Heraldian courage, even when they do not always enjoy Heraldian certainty. Avaton, Dymarth, Everday, and other realms of Harmony regard Heraldon as a difficult but necessary ally against Entropy. Relations with Elemendia are limited under the banner of the Southern alliance and Erenor is treated like a nation of beggars for its free-spirited nature.
Its hatred of Helkor, Othmog, Graazt’s servants, and the water demons of Dagon is absolute. Heraldians also distrust Avernia and any devilish diplomacy, remembering how Asmodean prophets once stirred rebellion by exploiting fear of clerical tyranny. In Heraldon, infernal arguments are considered most dangerous when they sound reasonable.
Infernal arguments are most dangerous when they sound reasonable.
Zargovia remains an enemy and its rumored necromancy crafts is deeply hated. With nearby realms, Heraldon is respected more often than loved. Its knights are welcome on dark battlefields, its priests in times of despair, and its judgment almost nowhere. Still, when the sea boils, the sky darkens, or the dead whisper from frozen ruins, many kingdoms are grateful that Heraldon exists.
