You have come to the Spiral Staircase. I am Eolon of Oemon, Loremaster & Elemendian Disciple. Here you will find the greatest collection of tomes across Therasya. Rest your travel-worn boots. Every shelf here stands valuable, and you may wander in the great company of our blessed Scarabs of Knowledge.
What you hold is not a book. A book has a first page and a last, and then it is done. This is the Pool of Knowledge as we keep it beneath the mountains of Kinetika: a spiral of scripts that descends the deeper you follow it, holding all we have gathered of our world, so that when the dark comes round again, memory at least may survive it.
Knowledge is the only weapon that grows sharper the more it is shared.
The Shape of the Spiral
The world is divided into wings, each a great layer of the archive, and each with a threshold of its own where its records are gathered. Enter wherever your curiosity pulls the hardest:
- In Cosmology lie the first things: Creation, the Planes, the Eternals who walk among mortals, and the plane of dreams.
- Through History runs the long turning of the Spire: the fallen ages, the Spires already recorded, and the war still gathering at the edge of ours.
- The Atlas is the body of Mother Thera herself: her lands, her waters, and her Places of Wonder.
- The Realms hold the living kingdoms, from the Thergen Empire to every nation that shelters beneath the failing light.
- The Classes are the callings open to a Therasyan soul; the Guilds & Orders are the powers those souls come to serve.
- The Paths of Magic chart the traditions, the schools, and the Haze from which they all draw.
- The Tales of Old are the stories themselves; the Renowned Souls are the ones who lived them; and the Blood Scripts name the horrors that hunt them still.
Each wing opens on an index of its own. You need not read in any order; nothing in this place does.
To Read a Record
Every record of a soul, a place, a creature, or an order carries the same small panel at its side, an at a glance, where we have set down the essentials, so a hurried reader may take the measure of a thing before deciding to know it whole. Read the panel first. Then read the rest, for the panel is only the bone; the flesh is always in the telling.
Watch, above all, the badges that mark the dead. You will find souls named honored, restless, undead. In Ancestral the state of a soul is load-bearing knowledge: it tells you whether a name may be trusted, mourned, or feared.
The Threads Between
No script here stands alone. Follow the golden threads woven through every page (a name, a place, an old war), and each will carry you to another record, and that record to another still. This is how the archive is meant to be read: not straight down a single page, but around and inward, the way water turns as it descends. Follow far enough and you will find that every thread returns, changed, to where it began.
When you seek one particular thing, rather than the pleasure of wandering, the Search will find it by name. But do not lean on it too soon. Half of what this place has to teach is found only by the reader who let a single thread pull them somewhere they never meant to go.
History does not repeat itself. It spirals.
Aids for the Journey
When the way grows tangled, the Appendices hold what a traveler needs to right themselves once more:
- The Glossary keeps the vocabulary of a haunted world (the gate-ledger, the count, the honored dead) so no strange word need halt you for long.
- The Index is the surest map of all: every name in the archive, gathered in one place, each a door to its own record.
- The Scriptorium holds the illuminated scrolls, drawn by hands finer than mine.
- And in the Old Maps you may trace the world’s shape as the cartographers of the realms have drawn it.
Herein lies knowledge to aid thy journey. Enter, and seek what thou wilt.
The Voices That Attend You
You will not walk these halls in silence. At the corner of every page waits a small light: press it, and one of us will speak; for I made a promise, long ago, that no reader of these Scripts should ever have to read them alone. Four of us keep the watch, each in the wing that is ours to tend:
Eolon of Oemon
Loremaster of the Spire
at every threshold
Aenaos
Guardian of the Temporal Order
among the oldest histories
Asha the Chronomancer
Witness of Ages
among the Places of Wonder
Grandmaster Tifrim
Hero of the Seed
among the lakes and the Haze
Let them speak when they will. One of us is always listening.
Read On
Enough instruction. A library is not honored by a seeker who lingers at its threshold. Choose a thread, any thread, and follow it inward. Wander until you are lost, and then wander a little further, for it is only there, past the edge of what you meant to learn, that the Spiral gives up its finest secrets.
The dark will come again; that much even I cannot unwrite. But you are here, and the lamps are lit, and the whole turning of the world lies set down and waiting. That is no small thing.
Turn the page. I will be just behind you.
“The lamps are lit, the door is open, and the whole world is waiting to be remembered. Read on, seeker, and read bravely.”
