Cinder Serpent

The burned remnant of a fallen dragon
🔒 RESTLESS DEAD UNDEADDEADLY

Cinder Serpents are the remnants of ancient dragons destroyed by demons. Their spirits never passed to the Pool and remain imprisoned in their broken, burned bodies. These horrors are encountered in the ash valleys surrounding Othmog. Once they stood as guardians of Numahen, but even their immortal powers could not withstand Entropy. They are the sorrowful remains of their former selves, wholly consumed by hatred and spite. They resemble long, sovereign dragons formed from ignited ash, burning coal, and drifting cinders, their bodies never entirely solid even when they take shape. They hibernate in an almost incorporeal state, little more than a sleeping malevolence that moves through smoke and fire. When the time comes to feed, they consume matter to take form: ash, bone dust, coal, and even shattered stone. Only then does the serpent become truly dangerous, wearing a temporary body of tremendous heat and ruin that may endure for several days after it has fed.

Their favored hunting grounds are places where scorching heat and the absence of water already rule: volcanic ravines, furnace-fields, burned forests, ash deserts, and the black valleys between Othmog’s abyssal mountains. They prefer terrain where visibility is poor and the ground itself betrays the living and demons alike. A Cinder Serpent will often drift as smoke through a ravine or battlefield ruin, watching with patient intelligence before gathering enough substance to strike. Its body sheds sparks and hot ash as it moves, and precious stones sometimes glow within its chest or belly like swallowed stars, trapped inside the furnace of its half-formed body.

In battle, the Cinder Serpent uses confusion before striking. It exhales choking clouds, veils the field with smoke, and moves through the haze like a fiery shadow. When prey gathers too closely, it releases a cone of flaming debris: ash, coal, bone fragments, and molten grit driven with enough force to tear flesh while searing it. More terrifying still is its inhaling strike. The serpent draws the air violently into its jaws, pulling warriors from their footing and feeding its own limbs with fresh oxygen until claws and scales burn brighter. Experienced hunters know that sacred ground weakens the creature, forcing it into fuller physical form and robbing it of some of its incorporeal resilience. Few, however, have survived long enough to lead one there.

Precious stones glow within its chest like swallowed stars, trapped inside a furnace of ash.

“Behold the unmaking Entropy brings, for once these creatures were jewels upon Harmony's crown of creation.”
